CulturesRoutine nasal and sinus cultures are not very helpful in the diagnosis of acute sinusitis. Cultures from sterile swabs inserted into the nose are unlikely to accurately identify the infecting organism since they become contaminated during the collection process by other bacteria in the nasal passageway. Moreover the organisms that cause acute sinusitis are well known. Therefore antibiotic treatment almost always begins without a culture.
