Types of Sinusitis

Classification of sinusitis is based on how long symptoms have been present. Acute sinusitis lasts up to 4 weeks with complete relief of symptoms. Subacute sinusitis lasts longer than 4 weeks but less than 12 weeks. Recurrent acute sinusitis refers to 3 or more acute sinusitis episodes within a year. Chronic sinusitis lasts more than 12 weeks.
