Medical Treatment of Allergy

There are three common treatments for allergies: avoidance of offending allergens, medications to relieve symptoms and immunotherapy (allergy injections). This section will explain the different types of medical treatments for allergies.

The major classifications of medications used to treat allergies are:

• Antihistamines
  
• Decongestants
  
• Corticosteroids
  - Oral corticosteroids
  - Intranasal corticosteroids
  
• Mucolytics/Expectorants
  
• Anticholinergics
  
• Leukotriene modifiers

Immunotherapy (allergy injections) can also be used to reduce the underlying allergic reaction.
