Drinking waterMany specialists suggest that drinking adequate amounts of water promotes proper functioning of the respiratory tract. It helps moisten mucus and clear secretions. Some specialists recommend drinking water as much as 8 or more eight ounce glasses of water a day. Having water readily accessible makes frequent drinking easier. Liquids other than water may also help. However caffeinated beverages and alcohol should be avoided.
The minimum amount of water needed may be figured out by dividing your weight in half. For every pound you should drink 1 ounce of water per day. For instance if you weigh 150 pounds, you would require (150/2) 75 ounces of water per day. Caution should be taken with excess water ingestion which may pose other medical problems.
