Atrophic Rhinitis

Primary atrophic rhinitis is a form of rhinitis found in elderly individuals due to reduced blood flow to the nasal membranes. Symptoms include nasal congestion and a constant foul odor in the nose caused by thick dry crusts. The condition is characterized by progressive atrophy (deterioration) of the lining of the nose from reduced blood flow to the nasal membranes. You may suffer from associated headaches and chronic sinusitis.

A secondary form of atrophic rhinitis results from chronic nasal infections, chronic sinusitis, nasal surgery, trauma and radiation.

Salt water irrigation and emollient ointments may help this condition.
