Diagnosis

The diagnosis of seasonal allergic rhinitis is based on a combination of the following criteria:
  • Characteristic clinical symptoms by history (for example: itchy, watery eyes; itchy, runny nose; nasal congestion; sneezing); other less specific symptoms may also be present (for example: headaches; post nasal drip; fatigue)
  • Seasonal pattern of symptoms by history (spring and/or fall occurrence)
  • Typical physical examination findings (for example: clear, watery nasal discharge)
  • Positive skin test and/or blood tests for allergic sensitivity for spring and/or fall seasonal allergens
  • Correlation of timing of occurrence of clinical symptoms with timing of appearance of seasonal allergens noted to be significant (allergic) on skin test and/or blood test
  • Presence of concomitant allergic disorders (asthma and/or atopic dermatitis)
  • Positive family history (immediate relatives with allergic disorders)
  • Presence of complications of allergic rhinitis
