Nedocromil Sodium
Description
Nedocromil sodium (Tilade®) is an anti-inflammatory and mast cell stabilizing asthma medication. Nedocromil shares some of the preventive qualities of
cromolyn sodium and therefore may be useful in inhibiting asthmatic symptoms if you take it prior to exposure to allergens, exercise, cold air, or airborne irritants. Like cromolyn sodium, nedocromil is not a bronchodilator, and therefore it will not quickly relieve acute asthmatic symptoms. It is used continuously over a long period of time to diminish the chronic inflammatory changes that cause asthma. Nedocromil may improve asthma within days to weeks.
Use
Nedocromil sodium is available as an aerosol through a metered-dose inhaler and is typically used on a daily basis 2 - 4 x/day. Nedocromil may be inhaled one half hour prior to exposure to known allergens or exercise. It may provide you some protection against activating your asthma in a manner similar to that of cromolyn.
Risks and Precautions
Side effects are uncommon. However they may include unpleasant taste, coughing, wheezing, sore throat, runny nose, nausea and dizziness. If you experience an unpleasant taste when using nedocromil, this discomfort can be reduced by using a
spacer device.
